Cleaning! Cue audible groan. I get it. It’s super pants sometimes but I also feel like it can often have a prolific effect on us after the fact. I don’t know about you, but once I actually get motivated to get off my butt to do a bit of deep cleaning, I often feel motivated to do a bit more. And then, I love the way my house looks, smells and feels afterwards.

Usually, I reach for products that I’ve used for years but have recently discovered that making your own can not only be better for you and your home, but also on your pocket! I’ve fallen in love with Method products of late, which are animal friendly, climate conscious, and sustainably sourced; which makes me feel all gooey and good on the inside! They all smell amazing to boot so I would certainly recommend. They cost slightly more than traditional brands but I’ve found their cleaning power to be brilliant, plus with the added environmental bonus, I don’t mind paying an extra bob or two for them.

However, in between those, I’ve attempted some of the DIY recipes from my good friend Jenn of Essentials of a Healthy Life. She’s back with us for the last time, only for a while 🙂 this week, with an awesome roundup of amazing DIY cleaning products that are good for you and your wallet! Quids in!

It is that time of year again and many of us will be doing some deep cleaning in our homes after a long winter! I am not going to lie, there are some areas in my home that need some serious attention! Normally, I would grab my TilexWindex, all-purpose cleaner, and Febreze without batting an eye. This year, I am making some changes for a safer, actually cleaner home.

This past year has been a year of discovering more natural options for my family, and spring cleaning will be no exception. If you do a little research on the chemicals we put into our home every day, it is scary the harm we are doing to our bodies and our health. How can we trust the ingredients in these cleaners when we can’t even pronounce them?

We believe we are doing our home good by killing germs and sanitising, but we are actually exposing our bodies and our children’s bodies to poisonous chemicals that can do some real damage. Many of these bottles say, “Don’t eat, poisonous, not for internal consumption, etc.” Why would we wipe our counter tops and clean the dishes that we eat off of with poisonous chemicals? We wouldn’t. But we don’t think of household cleaners as poisonous or as harsh chemicals. If the FDA is approving these cleaners then surely, they are safe, right? One thing I have learned is that what the FDA is approving is definitely not always safe.

I have decided to take it into my own hands to keep my family safe and healthy. I want to feel confident knowing that I am creating a safe home where my family doesn’t have to worry about breathing in harmful chemicals or eating off plates that were washed with poisonous ingredients. This is why I swapped out all the harsh cleaners with essential oils. I have been using essential oils for cleaning over the past year and I absolutely love it! It smells so much better, actually disinfects, and I love knowing it is natural and safe. I am going to share with you some of my favourite cleaning recipes using essential oils.

Thieves All-Purpose Cleaner

Thieves cleaner is my absolute favourite! I use it on everything from my counter-tops, sinks, tables, toilets, shower, windows, walls, you name it! I personally love the smell of Thieves and I love how shiny it makes my house look. The best part? It actually kills bacteria and you can be rest assured that it is chemical-free. You only need a cap-full with your spray bottle topped off with water, so it lasts forever. I also love to add a couple of drops each of Lemon and Purification for an even deeper clean! If you are doing some heavier cleaning, then add an extra cap-full of the cleaner to your spray bottle.

1 cap-full of Thieves cleaner

8 oz spray bottle

2 drops each of Lemon and Purification (optional)

Mould and Mildew Cleaner

This is my favourite cleaner to use in my shower. I used to use Tilex and I had to open the windows and blow a fan in the bathroom to help with the smell. It used to give me headaches, so I love this recipe for the more tough cleaning spots in my house.

8 oz spray bottle

1 cup of distilled vinegar

1 cap-full of Thieves cleaner or 15 drops of Thieves essential oil

15 drops of Tea Tree essential oil

Shake to mix and spray on the spots with mould and mildew. Let sit for 10-15 minutes for the tougher areas. Wipe clean!

Glass and Mirror Cleaner

For glass and mirrors, add the below ingredients into a spray bottle and shake well.

24 oz spray bottle

1 cap-full of Thieves cleaner

1 tsp white vinegar

5 drops of Citrus Fresh essential oil (optional)

3 cups distilled water

Dusting Spray

Shake the below ingredients in a glass spray bottle and spray on the dusty surfaces of your home and wipe with a cloth.

12 oz glass spray bottle

1 cup of water

¼ cup of white vinegar

2 tablespoons of olive oil

10 drops of Lemon or Orange essential oil

Citrus Room Spray

This is one of my favourites as it has such an uplifting smell and I love that I don’t have to buy Febreze anymore. It will make your home smell so fresh and clean! Shake well.

8 oz glass spray bottle

4 tablespoons witch hazel or Vodka

6 drops of Lemon, Orange, Grapefruit, and Tangerine essential oils or 24 drops of Citrus Fresh

Fill the rest with water

Yes, I realise Vodka is a part of the recipe. This is not to drink. I repeat, not to drink (haha)! The reason for the Vodka is that it gives something for the essential oils to attach to, which will leave the smell lasting and your home smelling great!

Foaming Hand Soap

I have replaced all the hand soaps in my house with this recipe and I absolutely LOVE it! This recipe kills bacteria, sanitizes, and purifies your hands while the Lavender and vitamin e oil works to improve dry skin and make them silky smooth. When you rub this soap into your hands, you will have no worries about chemicals soaking into your skin. Just some good ol’ cleaning and sanitizing of the germs on your hands! For kids, cut the recipe in half.

8 oz foaming hand soap dispenser

Fill dispenser with 3 tablespoons of liquid Castile soap

1/4 teaspoon of vitamin e oil

6 drops of Thieves essential oil

2 drops each of Purification and Lemon essential oil

3 drops of Lavender essential oil

Top with water

If you haven’t noticed, I say the word “love” a lot when I talk about my natural cleaning recipes. That’s right, I love all these recipes and you will too! There are also many other cleaning recipes using essential oils out there, but these are some of my favourites that I love using daily. These cleaning recipes will clean your home without the use of toxic chemicals and they are very cost effective. I hope you love them as much as I do!
