Something that I am regularly asked about is gift buying. It’s something that I’ve always been pretty good at, whether it’s the perfect baby shower gift, a regular birthday or a once in a lifetime celebration; I usually manage to pull something out of the bag that goes down well. So, this year, I decided to share some of my gifting secrets with you all in time for the festive season.

The theme for this list: going local! Shopping locally is something we should do more of. It supports nearby businesses which boost the local economy; effectively coming back to you in increased local benefits like house prices and tax bases. It’s a win, win situation that we should all start taking more notice of. Even if it is something specific that you are searching for, start looking locally first whenever you shop for anything!

I have deliberately not rabbited-on in this post, with a view to keeping it as simple as possible and letting the beautiful gift ideas do their own talking. Each suggestion has a link available directly to the business Facebook or webpage to make it a walk in the park to shop locally this Christmas.

And, if you do fancy a literal walk, visit Up-Market on the second Sunday of each month leading up to Christmas where there are loads of local suppliers of beautiful crafts, gifts, cards and food to browse!

Unique, Personal and Bespoke Gifts

Doing things differently is the best way to be noticed as an awesome gift giver! Get personal! Think about the person you are buying for; their loves, likes, hates, sense of humour, hobbies, lifestyle and style choices. Use this as a basis for getting something awesome that will have a huge impact.

Tickets, Vouchers and Courses

This may seem old hat, but trust me when I say this is an old faithful that will never really go out of style. The key is to ensure that you’re unique in the niche which you choose so your gift is something that no-one else has though of.

Home Sweet Home

It’s the hub of existence for all families so why not give someone something that screams the old adage “make a house a home” with some personal or well-thought-out home gifts? Vintage to Modern and everything in between, locally we are very lucky to have a plethora of amazing gift and home accessory retailers. I’ve listed a few of my favourites here:

Chicken Shed Gifts – specialising in shabby chic style interiors

The Carding Shed – Physical shop located in Hepworth, Holmfirth, is a multi-venue attraction based around a vintage theme. It’s a lovely place to visit for any vintage enthusiast!

Home improvement seems like a big step as a gift, but trust me when I say that this can be a really cherished present. People often like to do-it-themselves but why not give them a break (if they’re the sort of person who needs/wants it) and arrange for a payment to a local trades-person to come and complete the job? I can honestly say that I have done this as a gift, and for the right person at the right time, there’s nothing like the “you know me so well/you listened to me” look on their faces. And for ladies living alone who would prefer a female touch, why not contact Ma’s Paint with Pride for an all female decorating team?

Food Glorious Food!

Who doesn’t love a good chow down on their favourite foods! Customise something sweet at 04 Heavens Cake or The Sunshine Bakery, Or for that little something more sophisticated KC Hampers offer gifts for any occasion!

They say a good gift never goes out of style (well I do!) and I also say that style never goes out of a good gift. Treat someone to something brilliant for their bonce, fantastic for their feet and all that’s in between! Visit Working Class Hero for all your cool vintage clothing requirements (Imperial Arcade, Huddersfield)

What I will leave you with is a note of good luck and advice to follow these 3 tips for easier festive shopping:

  1. Plan in advance – have an idea of what you want to buy someone
  2. Never leave it until the last minute! (Some of the small businesses listed above have waiting lists and deadline dates for Christmas orders, so be smart and be early!)
  3. Set a budget for each person – and stick to it!
